From Nursing Homes to In-Home

When a loved one can’t be left alone and needs care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the only option that we used to have was to put them in a nursing home. However, you can now receive care for your loved one at home. Because it allows your loved one to stay at home and receive individual, one-on-one care rather than shared care, 24 hour and live-in home care is a less expensive alternative to nursing homes. There are no shared bedrooms or nursing home workers dividing their attention between in-home care and nursing home workers. Your in-home caregiver focuses only on the needs of one person, your loved one. By staying at home, your loved one avoids the confusion, worry, and anxiety that come with moving to a new location, such as a nursing facility.

Options for 24-Hour In-Home Care

After a free in-home assessment by a case manager, a care plan is made to fit the needs of each person and situation. However, there are two main options for 24-hour in-home care. The two in-home around the clock care options are:

  • Live-in Care: A caregiver resides in the house and stays overnight.
  • In-home care: Care is shared among multiple caregivers for a 24-hour period.

Live-In Care

A single caregiver offers 24-hour care for your loved one with live-in home care. A live-in caregiver is only scheduled for 4 or 5 days a week before being replaced by another live-in caregiver for the rest of the week. Over the course of a week, just these two caregivers offer care. The live-in caregiver is given a 4-hour break from care tasks every 24 hours to relax and recharge. If the case calls for it, an additional hourly caregiver can cover these four hours. The live-in caretaker also has an 8-hour sleep cycle. A room and a bed must be provided in the house for the live-in caregiver to sleep. Live-in care is charged on a per-day basis. Any extra care needed during the live-in caregiver’s four-hour break each day is billed by the hour.

The Advantages of Live-In Care

Why Even with one-on-one personalized care, live-in home care is still less expensive than nursing home shared care.

  • The expense of live-in home care is around half that of 24-hour in-home care.
  • When compared to 24-hour in-home care, the number of caregivers is reduced with live-in care. Typically, just two caregivers are assigned for the week. This gives your loved one consistent care, which helps them feel more comfortable with their caregivers and build stronger bonds with them.
  • Having fewer caregivers also reduces confusion for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Disadvantages of Live-In Care

  • The live-in caregiver is given a four-hour break every day. There will be additional charges if care is required during the break.
  • The live-in caregiver is required to take an 8-hour nap. During this 8-hour sleep period, there is no direct care or supervision.
  • A room and a bed must be provided for the live-in caregiver.

Home Care Available Around the Clock

With Tahara Health, two caregivers are scheduled daily, with each working a 12-hour shift. For medical or other reasons, it may be best to have three caregivers work in shifts of eight hours. The caretakers do not sleep in the home and are not given a room. Caregivers are always alert, do not sleep at home, and offer care 24 hours a day. Caregivers often work no more than four shifts every week. Home care is invoiced on an hourly basis.

The Benefits of 24-Hour Care

  • With Tahara Heath, a caregiver is with your loved one at all times, day and night, 27 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • The caregivers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to meet your loved one’s needs.
  • If your loved one has a condition that causes them to roam or require care at all hours of the day and night, 24-hour care is preferable.
  • Because caregivers are replaced every 8 to 12 hours, they are more alert when providing 24-hour care.

The Drawbacks of 24-Hour Care

  • The cost of 24-hour home care is somewhat higher than the cost of nursing home care. In contrast to the shared care of a nursing home, your loved one receives 24 hours of individual, one-on-one attention.
  • The cost of 24-hour home care is higher than that of live-in home care since it is invoiced on an hourly basis rather than a set fee.
  • 24-hour care offers less continuity of caregivers, making it less ideal if the client wants or requires the same individual to provide all of the care.
